Pet parents only want what’s best for their fur babies, and they can struggle to find trusted, clean dog supplements online. The industry is plagued by misleading labels and substandard products.
Our former client, a pet e-commerce site, took the guesswork out of it by offering effective dog supplements made with only whole-food ingredients. But to help furry friends everywhere lead happier, healthier lives, they needed to boost online traffic to drive more sales.
After four years in business, the company attracted just 2,951 monthly organic sessions. They had zero keywords ranking #1, #2, or #3. Something had to change.
So they joined forces with us for an SEO content marketing strategy and eventually link building. Less than one year into our partnership, we scaled their traffic to 166,853 organic sessions — a whopping growth rate of 11,212%. By the end of the project, they ranked within the top 3 spots for 2,538 keywords.
The Problem: Running an E-Commerce Business With No Content or SEO Strategy
The client operated an e-commerce site but didn’t have a strategic content marketing or SEO plan to drive site visits. In fact, prior to working with us, the client didn’t have Google Analytics installed, showing they weren’t monitoring or optimizing for traffic growth.
We knew the brand needed an expertly crafted content strategy, but first we had to understand their goals.
Brand Goals
The client had two main goals:
- Boost online sales and get trusted dog supplements into the hands of consumers.
- Become a trusted online resource for dog health.
The Strategy: Build an Effective SEO Plan and Boost Domain Authority
With the brand’s goals in mind, we started with a bespoke SEO content plan and eventually added link building. Let’s take a closer look at both phases of the strategy.
Phase 1: Content
During the first year of our partnership, the focus was on content. Specifically, we optimized existing content and created new articles that were both:
- Crafted to attract and speak to the brand’s target audience
- Well-positioned to move up the ranks in search results
Here’s a closer look at the three-point strategy we used to do that.
1. Selected Keywords That Would Drive Traffic
The supplement industry — even pet supplements — is highly saturated, which means the Google-ranking landscape is competitive. To infuse the site with a quick traffic boost at the beginning, we targeted long-tail keywords on more broad pet topics that had medium-to-low competition.
Once the site gained momentum, our targeted keywords became increasingly granular, focusing on:
- Dog behavior and health
- What foods they could (and could not) eat
- Specific breed topics (e.g., “Husky life expectancy” and “English bulldog skin bumps”)
These more niche topics generally had lower search volumes but were still low competition. Plus, they were highly targeted to the brand’s audience and conversion-friendly.
2. Addressed Pet Owners’ Pain Points
When crafting the content plan, we didn’t only consider a keyword’s traffic potential and level of ranking difficulty. A keyword also needed to be tailored to the audience’s needs in one of two ways:
- Answered questions about pet health: We targeted keyword phrases such as “Can dogs eat grapes?” or “Why does my dog sleep so much?” to help answer pet owners’ questions or address their pain points.
- Offered solutions for improving pet health: We covered topics such as “Tetanus in dogs” or “Dog sneezing” to help pet owners improve their pet’s overall quality of life. Within each article, we included a call to action (CTA) with supplement recommendations for the specific health concern, thereby boosting online sales.
3. Wrote Science-Backed Articles
Articles couldn’t just target the right keywords and topics. They needed to instill trust with readers. That trust would both help the client become the go-to online authority on dog health and attract customers looking for high-quality pet supplements.
With this in mind, we focused on writing science-backed articles that cut through the misinformation online. But that didn’t mean the content had to be dry and clinical. We used an approachable, friendly, upbeat tone that would resonate with the brand’s target audience.
Phase 2: Link Building
At roughly the one-year mark, the content strategy continued, but it was also time to start phase two of the strategy: link building. By generating high-quality backlinks to their site and content, the brand increased their domain authority, which allowed them to be recognized as the trusted resource they are for pet health online.
The Results: 166,853 Monthly Blog Visitors in Just 10 Months
MBE Group’s content and SEO strategy scaled the client’s traffic exponentially. In just 10 months, the site went from 2,951 to 166,853 monthly organic sessions — a jaw-dropping increase of 11,212%.
The brand’s rankings on Google’s search engine results pages (SERPs) grew rampantly as well. At the start of the project, they were ranking for a total of 1,451 keywords and didn’t have any rankings in the #1, #2, or, #3 spots.
Thanks to our SEO content and link building strategy, the client’s site:
- Earned rankings for a total of 90,128 keyword phrases
- Was in the top three spots on Google for 2,538 keywords
- Moved to the coveted #1 spot on Google for 1,418 keywords
Most of the #1 ranked keyword phrases attracted four digits in monthly traffic, but some of the more competitive phrases brought in 8,000+ unique monthly visitors alone!
Not only did the brand get the website traffic and rankings they craved, they experienced a boost in product sales. With our targeted SEO strategy, they received roughly 164,000 new, warm leads to convert into paying customers.
